Justin Fields Thinks Ohio State Misused Ex-Wide Receiver Jameson Williams

Justin Fields ended his college career by playing with four wide receivers later drafted in the first round. However, Jameson Williams didn’t get much opportunity until leaving Ohio State.

After catching 15 passes in two seasons with the Buckeyes, Williams tallied 15 receiving touchdowns for Alabama in 2021. Fields discussed what went wrong for Williams at OSU with the wideout’s current Detroit Lions teammate, Amon-Ra. St. Brown, and Fields’ former Chicago Bears teammate Equanimeous St. Brown.

“They were playing with Jamo,” Fields said on the St. Brown Podcast. “I’m not gonna cap. They were playing with Jamo.”

The quarterback claimed the Buckeyes coaching staff wasn’t particularly interested in working Williams into their offense.

“He’s the run-off guy to get Garrett [Wilson] or Chris [Olave] open, basically,” Fields explained. “He’s the alert versus the quarters coverage or something like that. But they really weren’t messing with Jamo, but I’m glad he left. And he went crazy at Bama.”

Williams registered just 154 yards at Ohio State in 2020 before transferring to Alabama. He exceeded that mark in four separate games, including 184 yards and two touchdowns in an SEC Championship Game win over Georgia.

Williams probably made the right choice by leaving. Wilson and Olave combined for 25 touchdowns in 2021, but Jaxon Smith-Njigba led the Buckeyes with 95 catches and 1,606 receiving yards.

Meanwhile, Fields could have questioned Amon-Ra St. Brown about how the Lions are utilizing Williams. The 2022 No. 12 pick has reeled in just 25 catches for 395 yards and three touchdowns in 18 career NFL games.
