Marvin Harrison Jr. has yet to officially reveal his Cotton Bowl plans.
Most observers are assuming the star Ohio State receiver will skip Friday’s game against Missouri and prepare for next year’s NFL Draft. Those suspicions felt more likely after Harrison didn’t practice Tuesday or Wednesday.
However, Buckeyes wide receiver coach Brian Hartline left the door open when asked about his conversations with Harrison.
“How do you know Marvin’s not playing? I don’t know, I guess we’ll just have to find out on Friday,” Hartline said while grinning. “Coach [Ryan] Day can hit on that when you guys ask.”
A reporter noted that Harrison looked “tortured” having to watch his teammates practice while sidelined. Hartline spoke about doing what’s best for the 21-year-old without announcing his status.
“Any rep that he doesn’t take, he is frustrated and always wanting to be out there on every rep,” Hartline said. “It is my job to make sure he doesn’t expose himself to any rep he does not need, but as far as how much playing time and all that, I’m sure Coach Day can iron that out for you guys. But Marv’s ready to roll if you ask him.”
With that said, Hartline expressed hope that some of the younger receivers get a chance to play at AT&T Stadium.
“I’m excited to see some of these guys get different opportunities that maybe they haven’t gotten through the year.”
Two years ago, Harrison had a coming-out party when future first-round picks Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson sat out the Rose Bowl. After hardly playing as a freshman, Harrison scored three touchdowns in a 48-45 win over Utah.
There’s a good chance Carnell Tate and Brandon Inniss could receive a similar opportunity this Friday. Harrison would almost certainly be the top wideout drafted if he turns pro in 2024, and players in his shoes tend to skip their final bowl game when not competing for a national title.
As Hartline , everyone will find out Harrison’s decision when Ohio State plays Missouri this Friday at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.
