Many were a bit surprised when Bill O’Brien decided to take the Boston College job after agreeing to become the offensive coordinator at Ohio State. But the Buckeyes ended up landing Chip Kelly and Paul Finebaum believes they’re better for it.
During Monday’s regular appearance on “McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning,” the SEC Network commentator shared his thoughts on the Kelly hiring in Columbus and they were mostly positive.
“Well, I frankly think Ohio State’s better off with Chip Kelly than they were with Bill O’Brien,” Finebaum said. “The fact that Chip Kelly took the job just shows you how little confidence he had in UCLA and he should have been fired a couple of weeks ago or a couple of months ago. I have no earthly idea why they retained him the moment he was right on the bubble.”
Finebaum added that it doesn’t feel like that long ago that Chip Kelly’s Oregon Ducks were at the top of college football and he was revolutionizing the sport.
Continuing, “But I remember Chip Kelly from what, 13, 14 years ago who was among the two or three best coaches in college football playing for national championships. So I mean, I think he probably made the right decision.”
Kelly will have plenty of weapons to play with as he transitions to the Big Ten. It’s hard to imagine Ohio State not being among the favorites to bring home a national title in 2024.
