Paul Finebaum and ESPN need a new college football head coach to dissect with Nick Saban retiring and Jim Harbaugh going to the Los Angeles Chargers.
Ryan Day may land the dubious distinction.
When discussing Harbaugh’s departure on Get Up, Finebaum looked ahead to Michigan’s next head coach having to face an Ohio State team that’s “loaded up” through the transfer portal this offseason.
That prompted Harry Douglas to start singing Glenn Frey’s “The Heat Is On” in reference to the Buckeyes head coach.
Dan Orlovsky then asked Finebaum if Day is “the new guy” for him to scrutinize with Harbaugh in the NFL.
“100 percent,” Finebaum said. “If Ryan Day doesn’t beat Michigan, I’ll finish that statement later.”
Day is 56-8 with Ohio State, but some observers only care about the losses. Three of them, in particular.
The Wolverines won their third consecutive matchup over the Buckeyes in November, allowing them to win another Big Ten title and Harbaugh’s first national championship.
While Day has taken Ohio State to the College Football Playoff three times, he’s yet to win it all. He’s 2-4 in bowl games.
Douglas claimed Day has “no excuses” after fortifying the roster. The Buckeyes added quarterback Will Howard to replace Kyle McCord while landing a star running back (Quinshon Judkins) and safety (Caleb Downs).
Finebaum said last week that he’s “more concerned” about Day than any other coach in college football.
“I’m well aware of what he has done, but his popularity — he looks like a busted stock on Wall Street,” Finebaum said on The Matt Barrie Show. “Should he lose to the new coach at Michigan, whoever that is, this guy’s got problems.”
