Ohio State hired Bill O’Brien as its new offensive coordinator and play caller this offseason, yet he might not get the opportunity to coach a game for the Buckeyes.

O’Brien recently interviewed for the head coaching vacancy at Boston College, and according to a new report from The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman, is one of two finalists for the position.

Feldman did not identify the other finalist, but other possible candidates that have been mentioned by outlets include Wisconsin’s Paul Chryst and Army’s Jeff Monken.

Boston College reportedly wants to have its coaching search wrapped up by the weekend. The Eagles are looking for a replacement for former Ohio State assistant Jeff Hafley, who left to become the new defensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers.

Sources: The Boston College football search has two rounds of in-person candidate interviews scheduled for this week, with the first round coming on Tuesday. A final decision is expected by the weekend.

O’Brien, 54, is a Boston native who spent last season as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach of the New England Patriots. He held the same position with Alabama in 2021-22 following a seven-year tenure as head coach of the Houston Texans.

O’Brien has college head coaching experience as well, having run the program at Penn State in 2012-13.

Should O’Brien depart for BC, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said he would hire a replacement coordinator who will also call plays. Day had continued to call plays since taking over as head coach in 2019.
