Earlier this offseason, Ohio State added former Texans coach Bill O’Brien to its staff. Ryan Day’s current plan is for O’Brien to call plays on offense next season.
However, it’s possible O’Brien never coaches a single game for Ohio State. That’s because he’s a candidate for Boston College’s head-coaching vacancy.
Boston College lost its head coach, Jeff Hafley, to the Green Bay Packers. The athletic department is working awfully hard to find a suitable replacement.
Day was asked this week about the possibility of O’Brien leaving Ohio State for Boston College. As you’d expect, the Buckeyes have contingency plans in place for that scenario.
“It isn’t just one of those situations where you take out one guy and put another guy in there and move on,” Day said, via ESPN. “It doesn’t work that way. But yes, we talked to different people for that position and we have contingency plans in place. Hopefully, we don’t have to go down that road, though.”
Ryan Day said Bill O’Brien is working in the Woody today.
Day said he did NOT want to give up play calling duties, and was going to make sure the person who took over was the perfect fit.

If O’Brien doesn’t land the Boston College job, that would be a huge win for Ohio State. Day has already said that O’Brien “checks all those boxes” when it comes to finding the right play-caller.
Ohio State should have a better understanding of O’Brien’s future in the coming days.
