Ohio State‘s 59-7 win over Akron was overshadowed by a bizarre blow-up on the Buckeyes’ sideline during the game. Veteran linebacker K’Vaughan Pope quit the team in the middle of the game, with a very public demonstration.
Pope was waved off of the field after attempting to sub in. He lost his cool, heading for the team’s tunnel, before a coach tried to coax him back. He then reportedly took off his jersey and tossed his gloves into the stands.
He was eventually successful in leaving the game, and let his very uncensored thoughts about the Buckeyes program known on Twitter. He was dismissed from the program after the game, and has since apologized for the outburst.
Head coach Ryan Day spoke with reporters today, updating that wild situation with Pope. “There has to be consequences for actions,” he said of Pope’s dismissal. “I thought he’s done a good job of taking accountability, and we’ll focus on moving forward.”

Based on that last statement, it seems like there’s a pathway towards Pope returning to the team at some point, though right now he is not with the program, and it seems very unlikely that we’ll see him in an Ohio State uniform again. He remains enrolled at school and on scholarship, but did enter the transfer portal on Monday.
Day also admitted that the incident kept him up the night after the game.
Ryan Day said he struggled to sleep the night after the Akron game because the K’Vaughan Pope situation “bothered me.”

“Last night I let my emotions get the best of me. For that I want to apologize to my teammates, coaches and Buckeye Nation,” Pope tweeted on Sunday. ” I made a mistake and know that I need to be better and do better. I’m going to take this time to reflect and work on my mental well-being.”
