Ryan Day has made a big decision regarding Ohio State’s upcoming spring game. The Buckeyes’ head coach will allow his players to tackle during the scrimmage.
Tackling during spring games has been a major topic of conversation throughout college football as of late. It obviously adds injury risk, but helps younger players get more live reps.
Day is well aware he has a young roster. He wants his younger players getting actual football reps to wrap up spring camp.
“I think it’s the right thing to do to tackle in this game,” he said. “We still have a lot of young guys that need to get out there and play football.”

Ryan Day is taking a much different strategy than many other college coaches. Many coaches employ wrap-up techniques as opposed to live tackling to lower injury risk.
However, Day it trying to improve his team on the defensive side of the football. Ohio State’s defense wasn’t exactly an elite unit last season. In fact, it was pretty awful at times.
The Buckeyes, as a result, said goodbye to veteran assistant Kerry Coombs, who spent the 2021 season as the team’s defensive coordinator. Day has since hired former Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles.
We’ll see a new look at the Ohio State defense this coming Saturday in the spring game, which will take place at noon ET.
