Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes made an impressive run to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game last January and are eager for a repeat result this upcoming year. However, even the head coach is willing to admit that the team still has at least a few question marks ahead of the 2021 season.
One of those unknowns stands out among the rest.
Day pointed to the quarterback position as the biggest question mark that still needs an answer before Ohio State takes the field for Week 1 of the regular season. The Buckeyes will need to find out how to replace first-round pick Justin Fields under center if they hope to make another run to the national championship game.
Day named a handful of other spots that his team will need to iron out over the next few weeks but he recognizes the importance of choosing a new starting quarterback as soon as possible.
“I mean the first thing I think is the quarterback position,” Day said, via 247Sports. “Losing Justin was really important, also what was the offensive line going to look like and moving some things around on defense, linebacker position lost those four guys. So personnel-wise, that was big. We have a new kicker and a new punter, so all big question marks coming into camp. And then I think just as a team, the leadership. Who are the guys this year that are going to speak up when things get tough, times get tough?”
Earlier this week, Day said that redshirt freshman C.J. Stroud has started to separate himself from the rest of the quarterbacks vying for the starting gig. True freshman Kyle McCord, redshirt freshman Jack Miller and recently reclassified Quinn Ewers are other player available at the position, but last year’s back-up seems to be the frontrunner.
Still, Day wouldn’t name Ohio State’s starter just yet.
“We’re not going to name a starter right now,” Day said, via 247Sports. “But there has been some separation with C.J. Stroud.”
The Buckeyes have just a few weeks to settle the quarterback position before the 2021 season begins. Ohio State opens the year on the road against Minnesota on Thursday, Sept. 2.
