Ryan Day Shares Honest Admission On QB Quinn Ewers

August 17, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

Quinn Ewers, the No. 1 quarterback recruit in 2022.

On Monday, five-star quarterback Quinn Ewers practiced with Ohio State for the first time. The blue-chip 2022 recruit recently announced he was reclassifying and joining the Buckeyes for the 2021 season.

Ewers arrived in Columbus with a strong high school resume and considerable hype. However, that doesn’t mean he’s ready to see the field for an Ohio State team ranked fourth in the preseason AP Poll.

In his post-practice media session, OSU head coach Ryan Day cautioned that Ewers is “a long way away” from being put in a game situation.

“I don’t know. It’s a long, long way to January, so I guess anything could happen,” Day said, via 11W. “We’re just going to take it one day at a time and see how everyone is working in that room … We’ll kind of see how things shake out. We’ve got another week of camp; once we break on Saturday, then it’s all kind of Minnesota. That’s when you start looking at depth charts and where guys are. But we’re a long way away from that when it comes to Quinn.”

After Quinn Ewers’ first practice, Ryan Day said the freshman quarterback is still “a long way away” from playing, though he didn’t rule out Ewers playing later in the season. https://t.co/FksPIH7f39

While Ewers may not be ready to factor into the equation at quarterback, it seems like Day is getting closer to naming a starter. Redshirt freshmen C.J. Stroud and Jack Miller and true freshman Kyle McCord have been battling it out this summer for the right to be QB1, and Stroud appears to be leading the race.

“I don’t know how much separation, I’m not sure, but every day he’s been competing, he’s been taking care of the football, making good decisions, he’s been a leader,” Day said regarding Stroud. “Those are all some of the traits we’ve been looking for. Certainly moving the team down the field to score touchdowns is something we’ve been looking for.”

Ohio State will open up its 2021 season against Minnesota on Sept. 2.
