Urban Meyer recruited and developed countless elite athletes to Ohio State during his seven-year run with the Buckeyes. So when he speaks, the fan base in Columbus listens closely.
With that said, Meyer was part of FOX’s broadcast crew for Ohio State’s spring game this Saturday. While on the air, he revealed what Ohio State associate athletic director Mark Pantoni told him about freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith.
Apparently, Pantoni told Meyer that Smith is “as good a first-year player” to ever suit up for Ohio State.
“You hate to put this kind of pressure on a player this young, but as good a first-year player he’s ever seen. And I repeat ever,” Meyer said. “That’s a strong word.”
That’s high praise, but it’s not surprising at all.
Earlier this month, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day admit that Smith could end up starting as a true freshman.
“If he continues on the path that he’s on, he’s going to play a lot of football and will certainly have a chance to start,” Day said, via Buckeyes Now. “I’m gonna be careful what I say, but he’s been certainly a pleasure to watch. And we are really excited about his future.”
Smith, the No. 1 overall recruit from the 2024 class, has already made a handful of impressive catches this spring.
Ohio State fans can’t wait to see what Smith accomplishes for the Buckeyes.
