From now until preseason camp starts in August, Land-Grant Holy Land will be writing articles around a different theme every week. This week is all about Ohio State heroes. Whether they are the biggest names in Buckeye athletic history, or underappreciated icons; perhaps even players who made major impacts off the field. Throughout the year, we will be asking and answering questions about various Ohio State teams, the players, and anything else on our collective minds of varying degrees of importance. As we celebrate Buckeye Heroes Week here at Land-Grant Holy Land, in this week’s fan survey, we are asking you to look back at both the recent and distant pasts to determine who Buckeye Nation thinks are some of the most important heroes in the annals of Ohio State athletics.
So, below you can check out the two questions we are asking in the LGHL Reacts survey this week, and then underneath, make sure that you vote. Obviously, these two questions have a nearly infinite number of answers, so if your favorite wasn’t included in the possible answers, feel free to head to the comments at the bottom of the page and make your case there.
We will share the results from the survey later this week, so make sure to come back and see what your fellow Buckeye fans thought.
Question 1: Who do you think was the hero of the Buckeyes’ national championship run?
When I think of Ohio State’s College Football Playoff journey last season, I think of a total team effort. While there were certainly players who had incredible performances, whether it was in the first two blowout victories or the closer final two games, every game felt like it was 11 guys working in unison on every play. Therefore, it is difficult to pinpoint just one guy, but it also means that there are a ton of options.
Obviously, the quarterback always deserves a ton of credit when a team wins a title, but the Buckeyes relied on multiple running backs, two elite wide receivers, and a rebuilt offensive line that massively outperformed expectations, and that’s just on the offensive side of the ball.
At every level of the defense, OSU was stout and, at times, impenetrable. So, I get it that it is going to be damn near impossible to settle on one “hero” for the run, but it’s the offseason, what else do we have to discuss and debate this time of year?
Question 2: Other than Jesse Owens, who is the ultimate Buckeye hero?
Now, this question gets a little more complicated (and not just because one of the options was recently arrested in a prostitution sting). Throughout the history of Ohio State athletics, there have been so many incredible stars who have transcended their sports to warrant the title of hero. From football to basketball and beyond, there are countless OSU alums who have become synonymous not only with excellence in their sport, but the epitome of what it means to be a Buckeye.
