N&N for 12/6
Tuesday morning started the same way most mornings start for fans of Cleveland baseball during the offseason: with a report stating that
— the team has no money to spend
— the team is itching to trade away a likable veteran or two
This time it was Paul Hoynes, and he was talking about Shane Bieber and Emmanuel Clase. Gobs and gobs of TV money isn’t enough for Paul Dolan. $20M of it is likely to be missing this year. The team wants you to think that means $20M has to come off the payroll. But this is nonsense. Plenty of money is still being made, and investing that money in the team would be a great way to make more of it in the future. But very few baseball owners are capable of thinking long-term, so we get articles like this.
But then, wait!
A bunch of old men lined a stage and held cards up in the air. The final one stated that the Guardians had the #1 pick in the 2024 MLB draft. WHAT!?
Other stuff happened yesterday too
- The Red Sox traded Alex Verdugo to the Yankees for 3 pitchers, one of whom was named Richard Fitts.
- Boston is also interested in Lucas Giolito (lol).
- Atlanta traded Marco Gonzales to the Pirates.
- Erick Fedde got good money out of the ChiSox.
- Chris Devenski is going to spend the season with the Rays.
- Erik Gonzalez signed with Cincy.
- Víctor Caratini signed with Houston.
- It was said that Mike Trout will not be traded.
