Cleveland Guardians Sign Former Orioles All-Star

February 18, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

Just a few years ago, former Baltimore Orioles ace John Means was at the top of his game. He earned an All-Star nod in 2019 and pitched a no-hitter for Baltimore in 2021. Unfortunately for Means, injuries have hit him hard over the last few years, including lingering shoulder problems. On Monday, Means found a new home in Cleveland as he looked to revitalize what once looked to be a promising career. The Cleveland Guardians signed him to a 1-year contract that includes a club option for 2026.

The Guardians have agreed to terms with LHP John Means to a one-year deal with a club option for 2026, pending physical, according to a source.

In 2022, Means underwent Tommy John surgery and spent the majority of the 2023 season rehabbing off the injury. He would come back to assist the Orioles in a push for the playoffs later that year. To begin 2024, Means missed more time with injury before returning. However, in May, he suffered a shoulder injury that required surgery to repair his UCL. A few days later, he underwent Tommy John surgery for the second time in his career.

For the Guardians, it’s a low-risk, high-reward signing that if Means can come back healthy, he can contribute to the Guardian’s pitching rotation. The Guardians look to win the AL Central once again. As for Means, it’s a fresh start with a team that knows pitching and knows how to get the most out of their pitchers. Cleveland’s pitching has been one of the best in baseball over the last few years. If Means stays healthy, this deal could pay off for both, with very good value. He is reportedly targeting a return in August. If all goes well, he can help the Guardians down the stretch of the season.
