Guardians 0 – Mariners 6: Shutout in Seattle

Do you think Meg Ryan can hit a fastball?

The Cleveland Guardians were once again looking to avoid the series sweep, this time against the Seattle Mariners.

As Nick would say, well.

Luis Ortiz took the mound for the Guardians with Austin Hedges catching. Ortiz started strong with a 12 pitch first inning and only allowing one baserunner. In the second inning, Ortiz imploded a bit, again. A lead off walk and a double had runners on 2B and 3B before an out was recorded. Ortiz loaded the bases with a one-out walk and a RBI single put the Mariners up by one run. A mound visit wasn’t enough to settle Ortiz down. J.P. Crawford hit a grand slam to put Seattle up 5-0 with no sign of life from Cleveland’s offense.

Ortiz ERA by inning entering today:
1st – 4.15
2nd – 7.62
3rd – 2.77
4th – 2.77
5th – 3.86
6th – 4.86

I am not sure what to make of the 2nd inning implosions.

Going into the fourth, two hits and a very long fly ball were all the Guards had to show offensively.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ortiz allowed a one-out walk that led to a stolen second base. A long single tacked on another run for the Mariners. With it 6-0, Ortiz did his best to eat innings. He ended the day pitching 6.0 innings. He gave up six earned runs on five hits and five walks. Ortiz struck out five batters in 104 pitches.

Nic Enright came on in relief in the bottom of the seventh to throw a hitless inning, keeping the score unchanged. Jakob Junis pitched the eighth with the same result, just with a strikeout as well.

The Guardians defense turned a couple of the gems – the only highlight of the game.

Steven Kwan was pulled for Johnathan Rodríguez, but there has been no conclusive word on if it was to give him additional rest or if he was injured. José Ramírez ended his on base streak in this disappointing affair at 39 games.

The Guardians have an off day tomorrow which means us fans get some reprieve from this brand of baseball.
