Game Recap for June 3rd, 2025
After a Monday off day, the Cleveland Guardians moved on to the Bronx to face the New York Yankees in game one of a three game series.
Cleveland offense started off quickly with Angel Martínez and José Ramírez hitting back-to-back one out singles. Both were left stranded with David Fry and Carlos Santana striking out back-to-back and the side went in order for the top of the second and top of the third.
The Yankees were struggling against Tanner Bibee who started the game with his ace level stuff. Bibee struck out the top of the Yankees line up and had continued to face the minimum through the bottom of the third.
The only baserunner allowed was Aaron Judge who walked on a “ball” 2 in the bottom of the fourth. In the bottom of the fifth another strike-called-ball cost Bibee his no hitter and an earned run. With Jazz Chisholm Jr. on first, a walk put runners on first and second. Another single allowed Chisholm to score from second. Bibee and the Guards lucked out when a fielding error loaded the bases. A misread by the Yankees baserunner prevented a second run from scoring. The Guards escaped the fifth with minimal damage while Bibee’s early game effectiveness kept him at 79 pitches for the bottom of the sixth. Bibee snapped back, he faced the minimum again, striking out another pair.
In the top of the seventh José hit a seeing eye single then stole his 16th base of the season. David Fry (its great to type that name again) hit a single to right that deflected off the glove of DJ LeMahieu to score the ever speedy José.
With one out Gabriel Arias hit a single to advance Fry to third on a fielding error. Arias tried to jump on the error, but the center fielder recovered in time to throw out Arias at second for the second out. Will Wilson drew a walk to put runners on the corners for Bo Naylor who, going into this at bat, was in a 0-for-19 slump. Bo flied out to left center, stranding a pair again, but now with the game tied. (Note: the error was changed in the seventh inning to a hit)
Bibee tried to get through the seventh inning but got jumped by the thing that makes the Yankees dangerous. Back-to-back homers put the Yankees up 3-1 and soon the Guards turned to Kolby Allard to retire the side. Bibee finished the night pitching 6.1 innings with four hits, three runs (all earned), two walks and six strikeouts.
Allard remained in to pitch the bottom of the eighth, giving up a walk and single. But a great throw down by Catcher Bo Naylor gained the second out for Allard who was able to work out of the side scoreless. Allard went 1.2 innings pitched only allowing one walk and one hit.
The Guards pulled together another patented two-out rally. Carlos Santana hit a one-out double to get a runner on. After a lengthy at bat for Arias, Daniel Schneemann pinch hit for Will Wilson with two-outs. Schneemann connected for a single that got past the second baseman and scored Santana.
With the Guards now within one run and Bo Naylor at the plate, Schneemann successfully stole second bringing Bo to a full count. Bo connected with a very low ball, flying out to left for the final out of the game.
The Guardians had a great game, keeping the Yankees within one run and only using two pitchers for the entire game. If you’re going to lose, this is the type of loss you want. The Guards will look to take Game 2 tomorrow with Luis L. Ortiz facing off against Clarke Schmidt. It will be a 7:05 PM EDT start for the Wednesday night matchup.
