Guardians News and Notes: A Walk-off and a Call-up

News and Notes for Saturday, August 2nd, 2025

The Guardians won a walk-off against the Twins on the basis of an RBI single from Kyle Manzardo, and Guardians fans got the news that the team is calling up CJ Kayfus.

You can read more about the win from Nick here. Manzardo delivering in the clutch, off a lefty defied a lot of (unfair) narratives developing about the lefty. Steven Kwan saw lots of great ovations all night from a nearly sell-out crowd, so hopefully the front office and ownership takes note of how beloved he is here.

Twitter user Joey Camusano broke the CJ Kayfus news and Cleveland Guardians Prospective was the first more typical Guardians account to put it out for the wider public. Fun day on Guardians Twitter! You can read more about Kayfus here.

I haven’t yet seen an announcement about whom Kayfus replaces but I saw folks saying that Justin Lada of Locked on Guardians said Kayfus will replace Johnathan Rodriguez and newly acquired reliever Carlos Hernandez will replace Tim Herrin. I could not find that on Twitter, but Justin is always reliable if this is what he said. Herrin definitely needs to work on some stuff in Columbus. Hernandez has great Stuff+ metrics but has been finding the barrel a lot this season. Hopefully the Guardians can fix the vet with the 97 mph fastball. I wouldn’t bet against them (too soon?).

Matt Dallas and I released a podcast about the trade deadline. Don’t miss Brian Hemminger and Matt Schlichting’s prospect episode released on Thursday.

Zack Meisel published an article about Kwan’s experience of the trade deadline. I am very happy that he is still here.

Around MLB

The Mariners beat the Rangers, so the Guardians are still three games back of the third wildcard.
