News and Notes for Monday, July 14th, 2025
The Guardians gutted out an extra-inning win over the White Sox and then drafted a bunch of sluggers in the first part of the MLB Draft yesterday.
Nicole has your recap of the game yesterday. Shoutout to Emmanuel Clase who pitched the 9th and the 10th. He’s not an All-Star on paper, but he is in my heart.
The Chase DeLauter saga continues. First, it was rumored he did not have a new injury, then Tim Stebbins and others said he has wrist soreness that has been bothering him for a couple weeks, then Cleveland Guardians Prospective said he had been hit on the wrist but it isn’t a concern. So, Idk. I guess we will see him… never.
The Guardians did some interesting things with their first five picks last night, drafting four hitters 6’3 or taller and a Canadian right-handed pitcher. You can read breakdowns by our Brian Hemminger of outfielder Jace Laviolette, SS/3B Dean Curley, centerfielder Andrew Walton, and RHP Will Hynes here. Here is some more information about Nolan Schubart who was drafted 101st. He is probably a DH but he has the most raw power in the whole draft, so an interesting flyer at that spot.
There was some general outcry among Guardians content creators about the amount of swing-and-miss in Laviolette’s game. I think the most interesting aspect of yesterday was to see the Guardians target big athletes who hit the ball hard. We will see how that turns out, but it’s a fun adjustment from a strategy that has tended to play it safe with contact over pop in the past and tried to find value in shorter players.
The draft resumes today at 11:30AM EDT for rounds 4-20. You can follow on MLB.com, the GameDay app or MLBNetwork. We will have a Draft Day thread up for day two as well.
The Home Run Derby takes place tonight at 8PM EDT.
