Chase DeLauter didn’t play for Columbus last night, but it was a scheduled day off and he was seen in the dugout. The Guardians didn’t play well in Cleveland yesterday, and they were all seen in the dugout when the Blue Jays intentionally tried to harm their best player.
So, yesterday was a frustrating game. The Guardians got absolutely dominated by Kevin Gausman AGAIN. I’d say teams should study his game-plan to find ways to beat the Guardians’ hitters, but it’s not like that’s particularly a challenge for anyone right now given their teamwide 89 wRC+.
Manzardo errors and Bibee mini-meltdown aside, I think the biggest point of concern for me in the game was this sequence:
Guardians manager Stephen Vogt had some words for John Schneider between innings https://t.co/HDcx5h4wKv pic.twitter.com/ePOgyB5Zg3

Afterward, Vogt clarified that the Guardians knew the Blue Jays would hit Jose and he wanted to make clear that it should have been done at his hip, behind him, instead of his arm. To be honest, I am not sure you want to be telling teams it is ever ok to intentionally hit one of your players. I think I’d prefer my manager say “If you have a problem with me, come after me. Don’t go after Jose who has nothing to do with how we have pitched to Vladimar Guerrero.” Then benches clear and maybe Vogt can chest bump John Schneider, we all go home feeling good about ourselves. USA, USA (this is tongue-in-cheek, Canadian/European/African/South American/Asian, etc friends)
Instead, Vogt doesn’t look particularly interested in raising too much of a ruckus and Austin Hedges could have been replaced by a mannequin and provided more emotional involvement in this scene. The vibes are off, folks. And there is only one way to fix them…
Promote Chase DeLauter to Cleveland. Heck, bring Juan Brito and CJ Kayfus along with him, I don’t care. This team needs a shake-up. And Vogt does need to show a bit more fire.
Our Brian Hemminger and Matt Schlichting did an Around the Corner Podcast! Exciting! Listen to it on Spotify here or on any other major podcast platform.
Nicole and I checked in amidst our frustrations on the Disgusting Baseball Podcast here as well, talking about ways to make this team happier.
I don’t believe DeLauter will be called up tonight. But I do think it may happen next week. Yay?
I hope Kevin Gausman gets an incredibly annoying kids’ song stuck in his head and it causes him to miss his exit thinking about how much it annoys him.
