Guardians Reliever Elects Free Agency After DFA

August 25, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

34-year-old pitcher Anthony Gose is now a free agent. He chose this route versus going down to the minors in Triple-A Columbus. Gose was designated for assignment by the Cleveland Guardians for the second time earlier this week. Gose has had his struggles as a pitcher for Cleveland this season. He struggled in his only appearance of the season against the Arizona Diamondbacks on August 7th. He gave up two runs on two hits and a walk in 1 1/3 innings, resulting in a 13.50 ERA.

Cleveland #Guardians LHP Anthony Gose has elected free agency rather than report to Triple-A Columbus. Gose was designated for assignment this past Wednesday.

Guardians Pitcher Anthony Gose is Now a Free Agent

Gose’s Transitioned Role

Gose is a former outfielder who played center field for the Toronto Blue Jays from 2012 to 2014. He also spent time with the Detroit Tigers from 2015 to 2016. He transitioned from a center fielder to a pitcher after the 2016 season. Gose had solid numbers as a relief pitcher with the Guardians in the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He sported an ERA of 1.35 in 2021, but through a small sample size through six games. In 2022, he played through a larger sample size with 22 games played and an ERA of 4.71 with a 3-0 record. Gose, a lefty, has also spent time playing as a right-fielder.

What the Future Holds for Gose

Now that he has followed the path of free agency, hopefully, he can turn things around and find a new environment with another MLB team. If he could get picked up soon by a contending team, this would help further his pitching career. It’s no shock that he has chosen to be a free agent to bolster what’s left of his baseball career. Gose is a veteran, and a contending team could certainly use a lefty reliever in the postseason. However, considering that he was designated for assignment by Cleveland, he has some work cut out for him if he wants to land on another team.

Whoever takes a chance on Gose will have to work with him to improve on his struggles this season. Can he regain some of his previous success? It’s possible, as a new environment can usually help shape a player’s game, confidence, and focus. Look at Cavan Biggio, released by the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier this month and then signed to a minor-league contract by the San Francisco Giants yesterday. His future appeared gloomy, but it shows that just because you get DFA’d by a team doesn’t mean you can’t find a home elsewhere.
