Columbus Clippers 14, Omaha Stormchasers 10

Box Score · Clippers improve to 17-22

Columbus won a slugfest on Thursday, outhitting Omaha 15-10.

The Clippers were led by C.J. Kayfus, who remains scorching hot by going 4-for-6 with a triple.

Johnathan Rodriguez was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three walks.

Other standouts included Christian Cairo, who walked three times; Brayan Rocchio who went 2-for-6 with a double and a walk; and Kyle Datres, who went 2-for-4 with a double and two walks.

Starting pitcher Vince Velasquez pitched 3.0 scoreless, no-hit innings with six walks and five strikeouts. Parker Mushinski added two more scoreless frames.

The rest of the bullpen struggled mightily, but with 14 runs of support, they couldn’t blow it despite giving up 10 runs in the final four innings.

With Travis Bazzana scratched after leaving a game Wednesday, the other stars for Akron stepped up in a big way.

Cooper Ingle went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a walk while Kahlil Watson went 3-for-6 with a home run.

Dayan Frias added a home run and a pair of walks while Jake Fox went 2-for-3 with a walk and a sacrifice fly. Joe Lampe went 2-for-4 with a hit by pitch and a stolen base.

Starting pitcher Tommy Mace was spectacular, tossing 5.2 shutout innings with three hits allowed. He struck out seven and walked three, dropping his season ERA to 2.25.

Ross Carver allowed a pair of runs in 2.1 innings of relief and Alan Hernandez closed things out with a perfect ninth inning.

Lake County got some strong pitching in a doubleheader sweep, allowing just one run in 14 innings.

In game one, Jacob Cozart led the way, going 2-for-4 with his first home run of the season.

Other standouts were Esteban Gonzalez, who went 1-for-2 with a double and two walks; Juan Benjamin, who went 2-for-2 with a walk; and Maick Collado, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles. Jonah Advincula went 1-for-3 with a walk. Christian Knapczyk singled, walked and stole two bases.

Starting pitcher Josh Hartle impressed again, allowing one run on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts in 5.2 innings. Jack Jasiak completed the game with 1.1 scoreless innings to earn his first save.

In game two, Cozart again led the way, going 1-for-2 with a triple and a walk. Gonzalez also tripled.

Lake County was a terror on the basepaths in game two, with Benjamin, Wuilfredo Antunez and Knapczyk all stealing a base and Advincula stealing two of them.

Starting pitcher Yorman Gomez tossed 4.0 shutout innings with six strikeouts, one walk and three hits allowed. Relievers Josh Harlow and Steven Perez completed the shutout with a combined 3.0 scoreless innings of work, with Perez earning the save.

Lynchburg Hillcats 4, Myrtle Beach Pelicans 3

Box Score · Hillcats improve to 22-14

Trailing 3-1, Lynchburg roared back with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the game Thursday.

Garrett Howe led the way, going 2-for-3 with a double. Jeffrey Mercedes went 1-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in and Alberto Mendez walked twice and scored two runs.

Starting pitcher Jogly Garcia continued his run of dominance. He allowed one run on four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks in 5.0 innings pitched. His season ERA is 2.05 and he’s shown elite strikeout ratios. The 21-year-old Venezuelan prospect is quickly becoming a player worth paying attention to.
