Scherzer started Wednesday night’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals. However, during the sixth inning, he took himself out, citing “left side discomfort.” Scherzer had an MRI done Thursday, revealing that he has a more severe injury than was previously thought. At the time of writing, the Mets have not announced what corresponding roster moves will be made.

The Career of Max Scherzer

The Arizona Diamondbacks selected Max Scherzer with the 11th overall pick in the 2006 MLB Draft. He showed terrific promise during his Minor League career and broke into the big leagues in 2008. After a couple of seasons in Arizona, Scherzer was part of a three-team blockbuster deal during the 2009 offseason. He wound up with the Detroit Tigers, where he truly broke out. In 2013, he won his first of three Cy Young Awards (21-3, 2.90 ERA, 0.970 WHIP). He also struck out 200 batters for the second consecutive season. 2013 marked the first of Max Scherzer’s seven straight All-Star selections. He posted 82 wins in five seasons with Detroit and 1,081 strikeouts.

However, Scherzer’s greatest successes came after the Washington Nationals signed him during the 2014 offseason. In 2016 and ’17, he was one of the most feared pitchers in the National League. Combined, he went 36-13 with a 2.75 ERA and a mind boggling 552 strikeouts in 429 innings. Both years, he took home Cy Young hardware. All told, he won 92 games during six and a half seasons in Washington. He struck out over 1,600 batters. Midway through the 2021 season, the Los Angeles Dodgers snagged him via trade. Down the stretch, he was undefeated, posting a 1.98 ERA. This performance, along with his overall track record, landed him a massive contract with the Mets. At the time of his injury, he was living up to his deal (5-1, 2.54 ERA, 153 ERA+).
