Reid Detmers Throws No-Hitter Against Rays

May 11, 2022 by Last Word On Baseball

Los Angeles Angels rookie Reid Detmers threw a no-hitter on Tuesday night against the Tampa Bay Rays. The 22-year-old southpaw needed 108 pitches to throw the twelfth no-hitter in team history. Detmers lost his perfect game in the Top of the 6th inning with a walk to Taylor Walls. The closest Detmers got to losing the no-hitter was on an infield ground ball in the 7th inning. Brett Phillips hit it solidly to first baseman Jared Walsh, who had trouble getting hold of the ball. The crowd of 39,313 in Anaheim Stadium held their collective breath until the official scorer ruled it an error. Then, they cheered wildly.

Angels Continue to Roll

Detmers’ no-hitter was another wonderful performance for the Los Angeles Angels. There have been quite a few. The win is the Angels’ sixth in their last seven games and 13 out of their last 17. The Angels started out by doing damage in each of the first three innings against Tampa Bay starter Corey Kluber. Mike Trout homered in the second inning for his eighth of the season. After three, the Angels held an 8-0 lead. There would be little in the way of offense until the eighth inning rolled around. Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash decided that the game was out of reach. He chose to put outfielder Brett Phillips in as pitcher.

That’s when things got a little weird. Mike Trout’s second home run of the evening, and ninth of the year, was just business as usual. As was Shohei Ohtani ripping a double off the right-field fence. Then, Anthony Rendon came to the plate. For the first time in his Major League career, Rendon decided to hit left-handed. What happened next? What else…he hit a home run. The lengthy inning could have been problematic for some, but Reid Detmers was ready to go when he jogged back out to the mound for the Top of the 9th inning.

Detmers got Vidal Brujan to foul out to catcher Chad Wallach. Next, Kevin Kiermaier grounded out to second baseman Luis Rengifo. Finally, on a 2-2 count to Tampa Bay leadoff hitter Yandy Diaz, Detmers threw one last curveball. Diaz grounded out to shortstop Andrew Velasquez to finish up Detmers’ no-hitter. Detmers finished the no-hitter with one walk and only two strikeouts. He faced only one batter over the minimum. The outstanding performance lowers the lefty’s ERA to 3.77 over six starts in 2022.
