It wasn’t for lack of trying, but Columbus came up just short in both games of its doubleheader Sunday against Syracuse.
In game one, Kyle Manzardo went 1-for-2 with a home run, a walk and two runs scored.

Bryan Lavastida added a solo shot and walked as well. No one else reached base safely twice or recorded an extra-base hit.
Starting pitcher Sam Hentges was solid in a rehab outing, striking out two in a perfect inning. Xzavion Curry then surrendered five runs on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk in five innings of long relief to take the loss.
In game two, Daniel Schneemann led the way, going 3-for-4 with a home run and a double from the leadoff position, raising his season OPS to .954, which is right behind Manzardo’s .956.

Jose Tena went 2-for-4 and Jhonkensy Noel obliterated a baseball for a solo home run.
In a bullpen game, Wes Parsons had a good start, tossing two scoreless innings with four strikeouts, but Connor Gillespie gave up seven runs (three earned) on six hits with a pair of walks in his two innings to take the loss.

Former Guardians second round pick Yordys Valdes continued his strong start to the season, going 3-for-3 with a hit by pitch and scoring three runs. He’s batting .340 thus far in 2024.

Catcher Micael Ramirez had the big blow in the game, going 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in the second inning.
Valdes scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning. With the game tied at 5, Valdes singled, then came around to score when leadoff hitter Petey Halpin reached on a two-out fielding error by the center fielder, which allowed him to get to third base.
Starting pitcher Jaime Arias gave up three runs (one earned) in 3 1⁄3 innings of work while allowing four hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
Trey Benton followed with 1 2⁄3 innings of scoreless relief. Ross Carver added a scoreless innings and Lenny Torres Jr. danced around two walks to induce a game-ending double-play and earn his fourth save.
Lake County Captains 9, West Michigan Whitecaps 4

Jose Devers led the way for the Captains on Sunday, going 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. Tyresse Turner had the only other multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a double, two runs batted in, a run scored and a sacrifice.
CJ Kayfus only had one hit, but it was a big one, a two-run double. He also was hit by a pitch.
Jonah Advincula, Maick Collado and Zac Fascia all singled and walked to reach base safely twice.
Starting pitcher Jake Miller gave up two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and a walk in four innings. Adam Tulloch gave up two runs on two hits with a pair of walks in three innings of long relief.
Zane Morehouse and Allan Hernandez slammed the door with a scoreless inning of relief each to close out the victory.
Lynchburg Hillcats 8, Myrtle Beach Pelicans 12
Box Score · Hillcats fall to 11-10
Both teams had 12 hits and Lynchburg actually walked three more times than Myrtle Beach, but three errors sunk the Hillcats as they accounted for three unearned runs in a 12-8 loss.
Catcher Robert Lopez had a big day for Lynchburg, going 3-for-4 with his first home run of the season. He also walked and stole a base.
Jaison Chourio and Wuilfredo Antunez both went 2-for-5 with a double. Antunez also stole a base.
Esteban Gonzalez was especially frisky on the basepaths, going 1-for-3 with two walks and a whopping four stolen base, raising his season total to 12. Luis Durango also went 2-for-4 with a stolen base.
Ralphy Velazquez also reached base twice, going 1-for-4 with a walk.
Starting pitcher Kyle Scott allowed three runs on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts in three innings. Wardquellin Vasquez gave up four runs (one earned) on three hits in an inning.
It was a rough day for Lynchburg pitching as every pitcher gave up at least two runs. Matt Jachec surrendered three runs in three innings and Steven Perez gave up two more runs in his two innings of work. The Lynchburg pitching staff was tagged for four home runs.
